Health Sciences Parkade
University of British Columbia, 2021
The bright coloured forms of this mural are based on the dynamic contours of scrubs. The scrubs represent the healthcare community that passes through this hallway, from surgeons to custodians. A symbol of the collective effort that sustains the healthcare system.
As people go to and from work through the corridor, the colours frame and highlight their presence. The blues and greens of scrubs have a particular function to give worker's eyes a rest from strain during things like surgery, and are intended to promote a sense of calm. The mural is meant to serve as a moment of visual rest, adding colour to people's day as they pass by.
The process began by digitally tracing outlines of images of people wearing scrubs. These shapes began to resemble topographical forms. The characteristics of natural features were accentuated, and are intended to provide a tranquil moment. Silhouettes of DNA inspired double helix shapes are found in the details, resembling mountain streams and ocean reflections. Suggesting the interconnectedness of life.
