Mitchell Elementary Mural

Collaboration with students and staff of Mitchell Elementary. Commissioned by the City of Richmond as part of the Community Mural Program.

The central theme for the mural: Movements That Make Us, is active forms of identity. Traits which are formed by interests and actions. The design reflects the most prevalent themes from engagement sessions with students and staff at Mitchell Elementary School in Richmond, BC. Students responded to prompts with drawings and writing about their passions and curiosities, and spaces they feel comfortable or at home in.

Many students drew doodles of their homes. Trees grow from vessels composed of house shapes. Symbolizing how comfortable spaces and communities can provide a nurturing environment for passions to flourish.

Sports iconography is found throughout. A sports ball Solar System floats in the sky. Geometric forms include soccer and badminton nets, field and court lines, and skatepark shapes. The colour scheme is a nod to the school’s sports team, the Mitchell Firebirds.

Creative pursuits like drawing, and making music are in the mix. Lines wiggle like sound waves and music production visuals.

Exploration and travel are hinted at with an airplane flying above the mountains, as well as pointing to the proximity of the school and airport.

Spending time in nature; whether in forests, mountains, parks or by the ocean is a common thread. Glass sponge silhouettes are found under the waves. Unique creatures which lived amongst dinosaurs, and can still be found in the ocean nearby.

Movement and rhythm are central to recreation and creativity. Dynamic strokes capture this energy. The animated forms depict a scene somewhere between fantasy and reality.
