Mountain Moves, 2025
Store mural for Lululemon Athletica in Banff, Alberta.
The mural features dynamic abstract patterns and iconography inspired by the natural world which shapes Banff. Lively forms embody the movements of natural forces and elements. The design process began by digitally collaging images featuring Banff landscapes and native species. By playing with various vantage points and perspectives, it considers how we perceive the world at different distances and speeds. Whether it be a slow calm yoga flow or a fast and frenetic trail run. A central theme considers how we are grounded within natural systems and cycles, and how our movement is interconnected.
Local plants and animals are highlighted for the ability to thrive within a chaotic and changing environment. They are symbolic of how strength, resilience and balance are found in co-existence. Fireweed symbolizes renewal and healing, as they are some of the first species to sprout after a fire. Moss campion blooms in the footprint of glaciers, in the extreme climate alpine ridges. The bull trout relies on ecological balance; its presence indicates healthy waterways.
The mural includes silhouettes of local mountains, one of which is Sleeping Buffalo, also known as Tunnel Mountain. The popular route to its summit is outlined. Although small in contrast to its neighbours, this mountain is integral to the local community. It is home to a popular trail network, which gives panoramic views of the valley. It is also the location of the Banff centre, a hub for the creative arts and the home of the local recreation centre.
This work builds on my experiences through over 20 years of living and growing up in Banff. My time within the mountains and outdoor community has been integral in shaping my art. I hope to capture the energy of Banff’s natural spaces, and how the community resonates within it. This mural was created in collaboration with Lululemon, and explores commonalities rooted in active movement.
